Opportunities to volunteer on conservation projects in each of Australia’s states and territories.  Volunteer projects are managed in conjunction with project partners, including regional councils, national parks, museums, landcare groups, conservation departments and other national conservation agencies.

The Wild Futures Program supports the recovery of threatened species by providing practical on-ground action to conserve Australia’s  unique plants and animals in line with approved recovery plans. The program is focused on a range of species and threatening processes across Australia and working with recovery teams and other experts to assemble new resources and create a wilder future for the region's unique plants and animals.

The Wild Places Program conserves, restores, rehabilitates, and manages land including land owned by the community including parks and reserves.  A range of conservation tools is used and the power of volunteers to improve ecosystem function supports other land managers and provides access for people to enjoy and appreciate nature. A variety of programs are offered in each state and territory:
  • New South Wales & ACT
  • Northern Territory
  • Queensland
  • South Australia
  • Tasmania
  • Victoria
  • Western Australia

Program participants are placed in teams of up to 10 volunteers on projects in urban, regional and remote locations. Team Leaders provide training on-site. Activities include:

  • Tree planting
  • Walking trail construction
  • Wildlife surveys
  • Seed collection
  • Weed control
  • Conservation fencing
  • Heritage restoration

Residential volunteer programs run in weekly blocks, starting and finishing on Fridays. Most volunteers choose packages of 4 weeks or longer. Volunteers can choose to start from any of the program offices in Australia (25 locations around Australia). Packages include all food, accommodation and project related transport, as well as a minimum of 5 days volunteering on conservation projects (based on a one week package).

Program Eligibility

Volunteers must be 18 - 70 years old. As this is an active, outdoors program, volunteers must be physically fit and healthy and must declare any pre-existing medical conditions, allergies or injuries which may affect their participation at the time of booking.
