ARGENTINA - Country Information

Argentina holds a unique position among Latin American countries. It is the second-largest country in South America with nearly 37,000,000 inhabitants largely descendant from Spaniards, Italians, Germans and other Europeans. A very small percentage of Argentina's population consists of Mestizo and indigenous peoples, mostly located in the northern Jujuy province amongst fascinating archeological sites, volcanoes, small Indian villages and nature reserves.

Argentina is a Latin American country where foreigners can feel at home and travel with ease. The type of Spanish spoken in Argentina is of a beautiful, sing-songy version of Spain's Spanish, and contains other peculiarities such as the use of the 'vos' form. Argentina contains endless possibilities for learning and discovering landscapes, people and cultural curiosities you may never have imagined.

CORDOBA

Cordoba is the second largest city in Argentina with a population of 1.3 million. Located in central Argentina 466 miles/750 km northwest of Buenos Aires, Cordoba is a university city with a vibrant student scene (100,000 students) and a rich colonial history.

In 2006, Cordoba was named the Cultural capital of the Americas. When not in class or at their internship, program participants can spend time exploring the "old world" and emerging art galleries, as well as the extensive street markets and the vibrant social scene. In addition, quaint mountain villages and wondrous natural countryside are nearby, just a short bus ride away.

WEATHER IN CORDOBA

Fall: Average temperature is 15°C/59°F, warm and pleasant. Mostly sunny and moderately dry.
Winter: Average temperature is 10°C/50°F, rather cold and dry.
Spring: Average temperature is 17°C/63°F, humid and warm.
Summer: Average temperature is 23°C/73°F, wet and hot. Intermittent thunderstorms and rain.

Programs longer that 90 days may require an additional visa application and fees*. You may extend your visa either by leaving Argentina (for another close Latin American country for example) and re-entering Argentina, or by paying a $25/30 extension fee to get another 90 days tourist visa in Cordoba*.

* Please check the Argentina Visa website to be sure there are no changes to these policies: Visa Waiver Countries: European Community, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Poland, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Serbia and Montenegro, Israel, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Turkey, Japan, South Korea, Brazil... TRAVELING TO ARGENTINA

Program participants fly independently to Argentina. Affordable flights within Argentina or South America can be booked in Cordoba, or in advance, depending upon your needs and budget. To travel to Argentina, you will need to have a current passport that is valid for at least 6 months after your program end date.

HEALTH INSURANCE

In addition to local Argentinean accident/liability insurance, full medical insurance coverage is required from your country of origin. You may choose to purchase international insurance through CICD for $40 per month. Participants electing to use their own health insurance coverage must provide verification of a valid, qualifying insurance policy.

In case of illness, our agent in Argentina will recommend English speaking doctors and the best hospitals. 24- hour medical assistance is available in the vicinity of student housing.
